THE PROGRAMME

SAAMS offers a one year diploma programme in animation titled 3D@SAAMS. This is a programme that has been researched and designed keeping in mind the latest trends of the global animation industry. The curriculum has been designed after numerous rounds of discussions with practicing professionals and stalwarts from the animation industry. A lot of care has been taken to orient the curriculum to meet industry requirements. At SAAMS we believe in imparting industry specific training to students. The course has been divided into two semesters with each semester having three modules of two months duration. The modules are taught back to back so as to enable students sharpen and polish their skills in different facets of animation as they progress through the course.

 SEMESTER 1 

Module A (100 marks) 

           History of Animation

            Animation – From script to screen.

            Mannequin drawing.

           Gesture study.

            Perspective.

           Human Anatomy.

            Introduction to Adobe Photoshop.

            Introduction to 3D Interface.

            Character turnarounds and Prop designs.(Concept Art Design).

           Project.

 

Module B (100 marks) 

            Principles of Animation.

            Exposure Sheet.

           Mise-en-Scene in Animation.

            Storyboarding.

            Polygon and NURBS modelling.

            Texturing.

           Project.

 

Module C  (100 marks) 

            Preparing and Following Handouts.

            Layouts.

            Dynamics and Fluids.

            Creating Environment.

           Lighting and Camera.

           Key Frame Animation.

           Project.

            Evaluation Test.

 

SEMESTER 2 

Module D  (100 marks) 

           Straight Ahead vs Pose to Pose Animation.

            Character Modelling.

            Character Rigging and Skinning

            Character Animation.

           Project.

 

Module E (100 marks) 

            Compositing using Combustion and After Effect.

           Editing with Adobe Premier Pro 2.0.

           Audio editing using Sony Soundforge.

            Preproduction for the final project (Show Reel).

 

Module F (100 marks) 

           Final Project. (Production and Post Production).

 

Besides the above, there will be regular sessions on film analysis and critical appreciation . Guest lectures by professionals and eminent people from the animation industry will also be a regular part of the academic work at SAAMS. 

At the end of the first module, every student will get a chance to choose a software that he or she wants to specialise. Students could choose from one of the following four combinations. 

a) Autodesk Maya + Adobe After Effects.

b) Autodesk Maya + Discreet Combustion

c) Autodesk 3D Studio Max + Adobe After Effects.

d) Autodesk 3D Studio Max + Discreet Combustion.

 

Before the commencement of sixth Module (F) each student will be given a chance to choose an area of specialisation. However, the selection of area of specialisation will be permitted only on the basis of the skills demonstrated by the student at every stage of the course work and also the assessment of the project work done as part of completion of each module.

d) Lighting and Camera

e) Compositing

f) Post Production

 

AWARD OF DIPLOMA :

At the end of the course, diploma will be awarded to those students who successfully complete all the requirements of the programme with atleast a minimum composite score of 50% marks in all the elements of evaluation.

 

EVALUATION & GRADING :

SAAMS follows a continuous evaluation system whereby students are assessed right through the programme. The various parameters for evaluation include attendance in class, punctuality, submission of assignments on time, quality of practical assignments, discipline, performance in internal assessment examinations etc. Student evaluation has two components; the internal assessment with a weightage of 40% and the end term examination with a weightage of 60%.

A separate minimum score of 50% in both the components is essential for a student to become eligible for award of the Diploma.

Those students who secure a minimum composite score of 60% or above will be declared to have completed the course in First Division. Those who secure a composite score of 50% or above but less than 60% will be placed in Second Division.
