The Ubiquitous Embedded System
Embedded systems are an integral part of many everyday devices and systems from automobiles, digital cameras, camcorders, telephone systems, CD and DVD players, and microwave ovens to sophisticated instruments that engineers, chemists and physicists use in their laboratories. More than 99% of the processors sold are used in embedded systems. More processors are sold per year than people on earth. Although embedded platforms are highly diverse, ranging from 4-bit micro controllers with little RAM to 64-bit processors with gigabytes of storage, some common properties they share are : Making efficient use of resources like power, memory, and CPU time, interacting with the physical world in real time, operating correctly for years or decades, hard to upgrade once deployed, requiring fast design, small and inexpensive.
