SCMS Centre for Research on
‘Corporate & E-Governance’

Corporate Governance & E-Governance are two emerging and highly relevant areas in the corporate & Government sector in today’s context. While developed western world have done lot of studies and research on corporate governance practices and processes in their quest for arriving at a list of best practices, their effort has not till today resulted in any conclusive outcome since the very area of corporate governance practices has a number of forces acting on it giving divergent results. Improvements have definitely happened but everyone is of the opinion that one size does not fit all. Regulatory framework in many countries have been strengthened consequent to high-profile failures like Enron, Worldcom, Tyco etc. In India, the attempt for good corporate governance attained importance recently and has now been assigned very high priority. Very few research studies have been conducted in India, given the very recent assignment of importance both by corporates and by the regulators. And, the issue is complicated by the intricate nature of ownership and the inseperable nature of ownership and management. Lots of opportunities exist for conducting studies and research which can help not only the corporate in evolving better governance practices but also the policymakers and regulators in policy making.

The explosion in Information Technology has given rise to lot of opportunities for improving the governance at the Government & quasi-Government levels in the areas of Education, Systems & Processes in the areas such as local administration ,Govt spending, Records for Land & other Dcumentation etc. State Governments in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have made tremendous advances & Tamil Nadu also has geared up to implement such practices- whereas Kerala has been lagging behind other southern states. Opportunities do exist to make studies and suggest improvements making use of IT at the Panchayat ,District & State levels in all citizen-centric activities. It can help in creating and implementing the citizen-delivery system at various levels(like e-Seva in Andhra Pradesh, Bhoomi-online in Karnataka etc)
