SCMS Centre for Research on
‘Information Technology’

The background and rationale of the Research Centre
The last two decades witnessed unimaginable changes in application of technology-propelled knowledge in industry. Such knowledge has made its manifestation in Information Technology based industry much more than any other areas. The rapid growth of knowledge driven IT industry has resulted in the application of IT in every manufacturing and service sector. For example, the automobile engine functions by microchip propelled systems. The banking service is today heavily dependent on IT enabled technology so much so that the rule of competition is determined by technology competence of the bank. The rapid growth of IT sector in geometric proportions has led to creation of an ocean of knowledge workers in IT and related fields. IT industry in India has crossed the one million mark in direct employment of human resources by the end of 2004. It is expected to increase to two million by 2008. This figure is what is available in record on direct employment. The indirect employment of IT oriented human resources in manufacturing and service industries is countless.

What does the above-mentioned phenomenon indicate? Every process in industry, no matter it’s manufacturing, marketing, financial, logistics or human resources related, is enhanced and supported by IT enabled services. IT has become the backbone of any industry making it inevitable and strategic. The key to performance and growth of IT organizations is effective management of the human capital. For improvement of the managerial systems and practices review of the existing systems is necessary. Therefore an ongoing research in the field of IT is full of scope and usefulness. This research is relatively new in India.
