These projects are initiated as collaborative
ventures of research where both faculty
and students contribute. The students get
exposure to developing research proposals,
outlining methodologies of management research
and skills in applying appropriate techniques
for research. The topics are chosen after
deliberations on its current relevance in
management practitioners and usefulness
for policy interventions by government and
other developmental agencies
Rural Needs Survey
SCMS understands in all its manifestations,
the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) of managements. In continuation of
the task of reorienting management students
for their holistic development, the school
has initiated and devised a series of socially
relevant research activities. The objectives
are dual. Primary objective is to introduce
them to the realization of the social problems/issues.
The secondary objective is to make them
well-versed in designing solutions/ devising
modes for opening avenues for future. A
Rural Needs Survey was conducted. The
aim of the survey was to look deeper in
to the aspirations, needs and need gaps
of groups of people in the rural area
living below the poverty line. Two wards
in the village of Karukutty in Angamaly
block of Ernakulam district were identified.
There were two IHDP colonies with more
than 150 families in both wards. Almost
all the families in these colonies were
below the poverty line according to the
panchayat statistics.
The students were involved in the whole
project right from the stage of conception
of the project. They were given introductory
classes in designing a research project
and also the various aspects of the rural
need survey. This helped them to devise
a questionnaire for the survey. Then they
were taken to the location where they
mingled with the people and gathered information
through direct interaction and focus group
discussion. The needs and need gaps of
the people were identified.
