How
we teach Management |
Our methodology is different from that
of other business schools. Though theoretical
inputs are essential to any business management
programme, we do not give it undue emphasis
as others do. Our stress is on the overall
development of the personality of the
individual. We believe what one needs
most are the skills to manage people.
How effective one is in managing one’s
people to achieve the goals set for oneself
decides one’s success as a manager.
|
Managing people needs special skills.
If a person is to succeed in today’s
globally integrated business, economic
and political environment some of the
skills listed below are absolutely essential.
|
Skills in communication |
One must have the ability to effectively
communicate in a friendly way. Though
this looks easy one needs tremendous amount
of training to achieve this ostensibly
simple skill.
|
Empathy |
The dictatorial or hierarchical system
of management is no more relevant today
because people have several options. Humaneness
and understanding of feelings and problems
of others are also qualities that have
to be inculcated in future managers by
training.
|
Inter-personal skills |
Wrong communication can lead to many problems.
Right communication at a wrong context
also can create problems. Every individual
has a right to self-respect and hence
interpersonal relations can be maintained
only by a trained mind.
|
Analytical skills |
Analytical mind is a product of training.
When a person confronts a problem or faces
a situation or has multiple choices from
which to select one, his mind is put to
strain. A well trained analytical mind
will have enough data in store to take
correct decisions.
|
The art of negotiation |
A business professional will be called
upon to negotiate hundreds of things everyday.
He may not be aware that he has to negotiate
with his family, peers, superiors and
subordinates in his office and a large
number of other people in his everyday
life, apart from formal business negotiations
he is called upon to do. Training helps
him avoid pitfalls and lead his family
or organisation to success.
|
Self-confidence |
It is impossible for
one to succeed if one lacks self-confidence.
A person should be conscious of his strengths
and weaknesses and all his attempt should
be to get over weaknesses and build on
strengths. This process of development
calls for careful nurturing and hence
the emphasis on building self confidence
through training. Only by proper training
we can instill confidence in an individual,
particularly in those who come from less
endowed circumstances. |

Personality
Development |
The most outstanding feature of our teaching
system is the stress we give to the development
of the overall personality of every enrolled
student. We conduct a series of programmes
with external experts to develop and sharpen
skills in communication, inter-personal
relations, analytical ability, proficiency
in public speaking, assertiveness, self-confidence,
interview techniques and a variety of
other skills that are essential for a
manager. A student who completes two years
of study at SCMS will be a consummate
public speaker, an adept in effective
communication and an expert in human relations.
SCMS is nationally known for its personality
development programmes. We charge a special
tuition fee of Rs. 4000/- per trimester
per student for this programme. This part
of the tuition fee also should be remitted
along with the Trimester fee.

Industry Interface |
We conduct interface
sessions periodically by inviting practicing
managers of different disciplines. This
is a lively question answer session where
the practitioner will talk about the problems
he faces and solutions he arrives at.
He will also build up rapport with the
students making every session an experience
for both. This is followed by case study
discussions so that the students have
a real picture of the business operations
they are soon to jump in.

| |
This
programme is organised by the students
themselves with active support from the
faculty. |
|
|
| So
its success is solely dependent on the initiative
and drive of the students |

Term Paper & Final Project |
As majority of the students who join the
programme are fresh graduates, it is absolutely
essential that they acquire an insight
into the manner in which an organisation
operates. Hence it is compulsory that
the students attach themselves to an organisation
of their choice for a period of two to
three weeks after completing the third
trimester. Students are required to submit
two term papers, one on Research Methodology
and another on Entrepreneurship, after
completion of the internship. The School
helps them in getting the summer training
opportunities.
|
The Vth trimester in the second year is
set apart for an in-depth study of a problem
or issue confronting an organisation and
for preparing a report. The students are
expected to place themselves in reputed
organisations under the guidance of a
senior manager for the study. One copy
each of the study report has to be submitted
to the School as well as to the organisation
where the study was conducted. The students
have to then make a presentation and appear
for a viva voce.

Specialisation
|
SCMS is one of the very few business schools
in India that offers twelve highly relevant
and topical areas for specialisation/majoring
for its MBA level programmes. It is the
changing trend in the global market place
that guides the SCMS to widen its academic
pursuits to pastures new.
|
Trimesters/Semesters IV & VI are for
specialisation/majoring. Students are
free to choose one elective from among
the various options in 4th and 6th trimester/semester.
Marketing Management is a compulsory
specialisation. The objective
of offering electives is to provide an
in-depth knowledge to the students in
those selected areas. Specialisation/majoring
is a basis for career options in later
life. An elective will be approved
for study only if there are a minimum
of 40 students opting for the same. Maximum
is fixed at 50. Students will have to
attain certain level of academic standard
to become eligible for an elective of
their choice. This will be ascertained
by a test, if necessary.

IMLP(Integrated
Management Learning Programme) |
The School recognizes
that experiential learning enriches the
educational and social development of
students. In line with this, it is the
School's intention to provide the platform
to each student to express, nurture, and
further develop the talents. Each student
gets the opportunity to participate in
a broad spectrum of activities as part
of their academic programme primarily
focusing on the ideas of intellectual
challenge, communication skills, creativity
and caring for one another in a network
of teams. "The Colloseum" -
a platform for debating out current and
pertinent issues and "The Quest"-
the weekly quiz series indeed give the
students ample opportunity for enriching
their learning and for developing their
communication skills. The "Vertical
House" is another team assignment
for corporate learning , in which a team
of students attachthemselves with an industry,
collect and collate data on that industry
and also identify and analyse core issues
of that particular industry. Social Project,
Theatrics, Cultural Club etc. are other
activities envisaged under IMLP to facilitate
grooming 'of the complete person'
