Research highlights of SIBB-R&D – 2007

Diagnostic kit for the detection of chik virus by RT-PCR
Rs. 5000/- for 5 samples. Direct blood samples can be used for the test.
The test is rapid, economical and simple.

Molecular Research group has developed three gene clones

  • Lactoferrin gene for the production of recombinant Lf protein
  • Omega 3 desaturasegene – responsible for the formation of polyunsaturated fatty acid (18.3)
  • Kaurene hydroxylase gene for the production of stevioside, the natural Sweetner, 300 times sweetner than sucrose.
Kaurene hydroxylase gene was sequenced.

Patents filed by SIBB-R&D

  • A processing method for the production of steviol from dried Stevia leaves-Patent No. 1436/CHE/2007.
  • A herbal composition comprising plant parts of Stevia sps and Coffee beans – Patent No. 2310/CHE/2007.
  • A composition and a process thereof- Patent No. 2327/CHE/2007
Gene Accession numbers

  • EU 119154 – Chik virus isolate of Ind KL 01 E1 protein M RNA
  • EU 119155 Chik virus isolate of nsP1 Protein M RNA
  • EU 131893 Chik virus isolate of Ind K02 polyprotein gene.
Toxicity test of stevioside, the natural sweetner has confirmed the product as non toxic and non cytotoxic.
